Vajiko Chachkhiani at Art Basel Hong Kong 2025
・Lower Than the Sky (2022) as a part of Encounters (EN14), curated by Alexie Glass-Kantor
・New work (2025) exhibited at SCAI THE BATHHOUSE (1D30)
Vajiko Chachkhiani is an acclaimed artist and a promising filmmaker. Blending narrative elements with a succession of fragmented images, his creations delve into personal philosophy, subtly confront personal politics, and engage with pressing social issues.
Born in 1985 in Tbilisi, Georgia, Chachkhiani initially pursued mathematics and informatics at the Technical University of Georgia before shifting his focus to contemporary art. He studied under Gregor Schneider, the Venice Biennale’s Golden Lion-winning German artist, at Universität der Künste (UdK) in Berlin, refining his distinctive artistic voice.
His work has received widespread international recognition, including participation in the 57th Venice Biennale, Italy (2017), Istanbul Biennale (2018), and Sydney Biennale (2020). His solo exhibitions have been hosted by prestigious institutions such as Bundeskunsthalle - the Art and Exhibition Hall of the Federal Republic of Germany (2018), Unlimited at Art Basel, Switzerland (2019), and Pori Art Museum in Finland (2022).
Beyond the art world, he is actively shaping the landscape of independent and artist-driven cinema. Working outside the Georgian commercial film industry, he is dedicated to fostering independent filmmaking. In 2024, he founded Fuga Films, marking a new chapter in his creative practice and expanding into the realm of cinema. Chachkhiani is currently developing his first feature film, The Dog is Barking, in collaboration with a Japanese production team.
